What ACELZO wants you to understand

Place value matters

In 47 × 23, the 2 in 23 means 20, not 2. That is why the second partial product represents 47 × 20.

Expanded form explains the algorithm

Breaking 23 into 20 + 3 shows exactly where the partial products come from.

⚡ Multiplication Shortcut Vault

×5

Multiply by 10, then take half. Example: 38 × 5 → 380 ÷ 2 = 190.

×9

Multiply by 10, then subtract one group. 27 × 9 → 270 − 27 = 243.

Doubling & halving

When one factor is even, halve it and double the other. 16 × 25 → 8 × 50 → 4 × 100 = 400.

Friendly number

49 × 6 → 50 × 6 − 6 = 294.

When not to use: Skip a shortcut when it creates more mental steps than the standard or expanded-form method.

Check: Estimate first. 49 × 6 should be close to 50 × 6 = 300.
